Zulu helps Birmingham innovate with the new Green Restaurant Awards

Written by on 30 July 2010

The city’s Environmental Partnership is the first to introduce a new awards scheme to challenge restaurants in Birmingham to show their green credentials. The Green Restaurant Awards are designed to raise awareness and highlight the commitment Birmingham restaurants are making to sustainability and the environment. A key driver of the scheme is the need to convey what benefits there are to restaurants by being more environmentally responsible and communicate what green initiatives can and need to be implemented to make Birmingham the gold standard for the UK.

The free-to-enter awards were separated into 4 distinct categories: Waste Management, Energy Reduction, Staff & Community and Purchasing, - with one overarching award being given to the restaurant that showed exemplary commitment to all of these areas.

Zulu was asked to produce the theme for the awards and also create an innovative awards plaque using recycled materials. Zulu came up with the concept of using a chopping board made from sustainable wood as the base to the awards plaque. The design and sponsors logos, along with the award winner’s name, were printed directly onto the wood using vegetable based inks. With the centrepiece being made up of pressed herbs (which were all sourced locally, some from our very own back gardens), forming the word ‘winner’. The overarching winner had the words cut out of the centrepiece to provide a distinct difference without removing itself from the concept.

The result was an acclaimed success with the plaques being gratefully received by the winners of each category, especially the overall winner, Moor Hall Hotel. With interest being shown from London’s Sustainable Restaurant Awards, sponsors already signing up to extend their backing of the awards next year and keen interest from some of Birmingham top profile restaurants, next year’s awards look set to be a big affair.

Great to see an incentive for restaurants in Birmingham to make an effort to be more 'green' in the way they conduct their business. I love the way the actual award itself is completely 'green' as well, it looks the business.
