Birmingham Recycling & Reuse Maps
As recycling (and how we manage our carbon footprint) becomes a bigger part of our lives, our ability to access information that helps us achieve these goals also becomes more important. With this in mind, the Birmingham Environmental Partnership instigated an initiative in conjunction with the Ladywood Furniture Project, to provide a comprehensive directory of all the city’s recycling and reuse charity shops, along with a complete list of all Kerb-side Recycling Points (these are where you can take your unwanted glass, cans, paper and textiles).
Zulu was asked to design a user-friendly map that contained all of the participating charities details and locations in a compact format, to be kept as a reference guide within the household. Each constituency has it’s own map, which was designed specifically for the partnership and allows the partnership to easily make additions and updates in the future.
The map uses a colour scheme, number and icon system to deliver a wealth of information. Zulu also developed the project into a web-based version, which uses popup boxes over the key markers to deliver the information easily and succinctly. The printed maps were produced on the most environmentally friendly paper available, which is 100% recycled, FSC, chlorine free, ISO 14001, 100% NAPM accredited, uncoated paper and were printed using vegetable inks - thus minimising the impact the maps have on the city’s carbon footprint.
The maps have been very well received and already, new organisations and charitable bodies are registering their interest, in order to be included on next year’s version.

Recycling for most people seems a hassle, but once you realise that you have services in your local area, suddenly a lot more people will start sorting their waste. So I am well in favor of any product that can provide information and make recycling a part of everyday life.
